My perception of social networks as a whole is that it’s a way for people to have their voices heard by an international community. Any person with access to a computer has access to these networks, and to find out who you are. Social networks create a global community. Many people use social networks like facebook or Myspace to keep in touch with friends electronically. In today’s society, social networks are important for connecting people and building relationships based around common interests. It helps people see what is going on in the world around them.
Shirky is example of social networking at its best. It is unfortunate for the teenager who got ahold of the phone in the cab, but it shows a society who comes together on an issue of humanity, and that is something that is rare these days. The many uses of social networks have become apparent and it’s a crazy change to how things used to be.
I personally use facebook to stay in touch with my friends from Colorado and to share memories with my friends at Texas Christian University. It has helped me keep friendships that would have been lost when I went to college. It also helps people know what’s going on in my life and important events that are coming up. Sometimes I feel like facebook is a burden because it gives an instant access to my life and personal information.
In this course I want to learn how to be a better writer, and how to communicate my ideas and beliefs effectively. Writing is essential to every person’s life, whether they choose to go into a career or not. A social networking class helps benefit my learning by teaching me to stand behind my opinions and communicate things clearly to others. Social networking teaches a person to be precise and effective in the way that her message is portrayed.
Good point about you sometimes feel your privacy is kind of given up with facebook and myspace.
